Preventive Maintenance Guidelines for MICROVAP Evaporators

Extend the life of your MICROVAP with routine care

Organomation’s MICROVAP evaporators are built for durability, even under heavy lab use. With routine upkeep and preventative maintenance every 1-2 years, your MICROVAP can deliver reliable performance for many years. Proactive care not only maximizes instrument life but also improves sample consistency and reduces the risk of downtime.

Routine Care

Ongoing care between scheduled PM inspections helps prevent small issues from becoming costly repairs. These tasks are best handled by your lab staff as part of regular equipment upkeep.

Needles

After each use, clean needles to prevent buildup and cross-contamination. Hand-cleaning is simple: wipe the outside with a solvent-dampened cloth, then flush the interior with a gentle cleaning solution using a syringe. Rinse with deionized water and allow to dry thoroughly. Autoclaves and ultrasonic cleaners can also be used. Damaged or corroded needles should be replaced.

General Cleaning

Wipe down the bath case and manifold with a non-abrasive sponge or soft cloth, especially if the MICROVAP was subject to a solvent spill or was used with corrosive solvents. A mild lab detergent like Liquinox or Alconox is fine for use. Avoid harsh organics (e.g., acetone) on painted areas, as these may damage the finish.

Air Filter

Check the air filter periodically for discoloration, which can indicate oil saturation or clogging. A compromised filter may affect gas flow and should be replaced.

Annual Preventative Maintenance

Every one to two years, a more thorough inspection and tune-up is recommended. This can be done in-house using an Organomation PM kit, or on-site by a certified service technician.

⚠️ Caution: Always follow the official PM instructions for your specific model. This guide is intended to provide general recommendations only.

Heat Block Calibration

If your MICROVAP includes a heating block, check that it reaches and holds your target temperature. Recalibration should be done every 1-2 years using a calibrated thermometer. Organomation offers heat block inserts for precise thermometer placement.

Replacement of Routine Wear Parts

We recommend preemptively replacing the air filter, evaporation needles, and silicone gas distribution tubing for optimal performance. Swapping these components proactively helps avoid performance issues from cracked tubing, clogged needles, or restricted airflow.

Hoist Lubrication and Alignment

Your nitrogen manifold should raise and lower smoothly, and needles should be centered over each sample position. If motion is jerky or the needles hit the sides of the tubes, cleaning, realignment, or lubrication may be necessary.

Inspection of Serviceable Components

Inspect fittings, hoist springs, gas connections, and other mechanical parts for wear. While these parts generally last several years, operating conditions can shorten their lifespan.

Gas Flow Verification

Once maintenance is complete and the unit is reassembled, it’s a good idea to confirm gas flow through the system. This check ensures there are no leaks, that all fittings are secure, and that the flowmeter responds correctly to gas flow.

What If You Find an Issue?

If something looks worn, cracked, misaligned, or not functioning as expected during your PM check, contact Organomation. We’ll help you identify and order any necessary replacement parts or discuss other service options if preferred.

PM Options for Your MICROVAP

Do-It-Yourself preventative maintenance kits are ideal for labs that prefer to manage maintenance internally. Our PM kits come with step-by-step instructions tailored to your MICROVAP model, routine replacement parts, and a hex key for adjustments. You’ll need a calibrated thermometer and basic tools like a Phillips head screwdriver. The full process typically takes 1-3 hours, depending on the model and the condition of your MICROVAP.
